Week 4 – Introduction to Right Ventricular Systolic Function and Cardiac Assessment of Pulmonary Emboli

Week 4 goals include obtaining RV inflow/outflow views, introducing tissue doppler imaging and methods of RV systolic assessment, measuring RVSP, PASP, MPAP, pAT, TAPSE, s’, reviewing relevant literature on RV failure and pulmonary embolism. ASE guidelines, reading checklist, video review, and hands-on checklist are also included.

Goals of Week 4:

  • Obtain RV inflow and outflow views
  • Introduce tissue doppler imaging
  • Introduce methods of RV systolic assessment
  • Introduce methods of measuring RVSP, PASP, MPAP, pulmonary acceleration time (pAT)
  • Measure the tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE)
  • Measure the myocardial velocity of the RV free wall (s’)
  • Review pertinent literature related to RV failure and pulmonary embolism
